The sense of aesthetics is a primary indicator of culture. Here it operates in the placement of stones and posts at a farm entrance near Bathurst. At one level the whitewash is functional - designed for dark and possibly tipsy nights driving home from the club. But it is also a gesture of elegance in keeping with a sense of appropriate order; a territorial marker of the colonial spirit.
