The church stands alone in open countryside between Grahamstown and Bathurst. The tree cluster is Belhambra, a species from the West Indies whose surface roots adapt it readily to sandy soils and a coastal climate. Their presence is a reminder of the spread of the British empire and the lateral links and associations that bound it together.
